چکیده

In this paper we introduce three natural “score statistics” for testing the hypothesis that F (t0) takes on a fixed value in the context of nonparametric inference with current status data. These three new test statistics have natural intepretations in terms of certain (weighted) L2 distances, and are also connected to natural “one-sided” scores. We compare these new test statistics with an analogue of the classical Wald statistic and the likelihood ratio statistic introduced in Banerjee and Wellner (2001) for the same testing problem. Under classical “regular” statistical problems the likelihood ratio, score, and Wald statistics all have the same chi-squared limiting distribution under the null hypothesis. In sharp contrast, in this non-regular problem all three statistics have different limiting distributions under the null hypothesis. Thus we begin by establishing the limit distribution theory of the statistics under the null hypothesis, and discuss calculation of the relevant critical points for the test statistics. Once the null distribution theory is known, the immediate question becomes that of power. We establish the limiting behavior of the three types of statistics under local alternatives. We have also compared the rejection probabilities of these five different statistics via a limited Monte-Carlo study. Our conclusions are: (a) the Wald statistic is less powerful than the likelihood ratio and score statistics; and (b) one of the score statistics may have more power than the likelihood ratio statistic for some alternatives.

Likelihood Ratio, Score, arid Wald Statistics in Models with Monotone Functions: Some Comparisons

BANERJEE AND WELLNER (2001) introduced and studied the likelihood ratio statistic for testing the hypothesis that a monotone function takes on a fixed value at a fixed point in the context of estimating the distribution function of the survival time in the interval censoring model. In this paper we continue to use the interval censoring model as a simple "test problem" . We introduce three natu...

Comparison of Wald, Score, and Likelihood Ratio Tests for Response Adaptive Designs

Data collected from response adaptive designs are dependent. Traditional statistical methods need to be justified for the use in response adaptive designs. This paper generalizes the Rao’s score test to response adaptive designs and introduces a generalized score statistic. Simulation is conducted to compare the statistical powers of the Wald, the score, the generalized score and the likelihood...

The use of score tests for inference on variance components.

Whenever inference for variance components is required, the choice between one-sided and two-sided tests is crucial. This choice is usually driven by whether or not negative variance components are permitted. For two-sided tests, classical inferential procedures can be followed, based on likelihood ratios, score statistics, or Wald statistics. For one-sided tests, however, one-sided test statis...

Robust statistical tests of genetic association for the case- control study design

1 The central theme in case-control genetic association studies is to efficiently identify genetic markers associated with case-control status. Powerful statistical methods are critical to accomplishing this goal. A popular statistical method is the model-free Pearson's chi-square test. To achieve increased power, model-based tests have been widely used despite their lack of robustness to model...

Progressive Type II Censored Order Statistics and their Concomitants: Some Stochastic Comparisons Results

In this paper we prove some stochastic comparisons results for progressive type II censored order statistics. The problem of stochastically comparing concomitants of the two progressive type II censored order statistics with possibly different schemes, under different kinds of dependence between X and Y is considered and it is proved that if Y is stochastically increasing (decreasing) in X, ...
